It’s a bit strange for a Jerseyman to watch a film about WWII Guernsey in Switzerland. As can be imagined, the audience was small.
I was pleased to discover a war film with a difference: no explicit brutality and no sex. Instead, the events were moving, revealing the hardship of life on an occupied island with very limited trade, the misery of the prison workers, and the consequences of both wellmeant compromise and culpable collaboration with the enemy. The relationships are colourful, contrasting the London elite with simple island folk. And the main romance is warmheartedly portrayed.
The acting is excellent, even down to five-year old Kit. It’s a pity it wasn’t filmed in situ, because the town, the cottages, and the scenery were blatantly not Guernsey.
Interesting it is now a film! I read the book: it is indeed interesting and it sounds like the adaptation was respectful to the origianl – not always the case!
